This 1st Year Issue, of the 1

U.S.
Small Cent, shows Superb Feather Detail on the obverse, with minor wear on the Reverse as well. This is a Beautiful Specimen, of a Highly Ambitious Eagle Coin Design, which is one of the reasons this coin did not last. It was Hoarded because of its Beauty; And, it had production problems as well. The Tails and the Heads would not always strike well; And when they did, the coins would still not stack well. This High Grade example has a Nice, Even Copper Nickel Tone.  This

The Flying Eagle Penny was the First
U.S.
Small Cent, and was issued by Congress in 1856. The original (2000) prototypes that were made in 1856 were sold directly to collectors, so the new coin actually made its debut to the nation in 1857. The 1856 is an Ultra Rare Date. The
U.S.
Mint set up booths on their front lawn in
Philadelphia
to sell the new Penny directly to the public. Scalpers re-sold the same coins for a premium, to people who didn’t want to wait in the lines! They were a Hoarded Coin right from the start. Congress had not foreseen the collect-ability of these new coins, which caused major commerce shortages, that they were actually issued to fix! The Flying Eagle Cent only saw two years of commercial issue, in 1857 and 1858, before James Longacre switched the design to the Indian Head in 1859- the same year that Abe Lincoln ran for President. In 1861, the Civil War broke out, making Copper & Nickel (and The Flying Eagle Cent) even more scarce.

U.S.
History!
The ANA Grading Standards Book (Whitman) defines the Choice Extra Fine grade as: “Very Light Wear on only the highest points. Wear shows on breast, wing tips, and head. All feathers are plain. High points of the leaves and bow are lightly worn. Traces of mint luster still show."
